Planning a camping excursion at a New Zealand destination not listed in our Top 15 Freedom Camping Destinations? Be sure to do your homework before you set off on your journey. Each regional, district and city council in New Zealand has its own regulations, policies and bylaws regarding freedom camping, and penalties can be steep if you’re caught breaking the rules.
Visit the council website governing the area you wish to visit, and search their site for information about freedom camping and freedom camping bylaws. If in doubt, give the local council governing your destination a call and ask them about their freedom camping policies. They will be more than happy to help, and will be able to advise you on the best scenic spots to visit during your stay.
