Freedom Camping in Westland

Planning a free camping journey around the Westland district? Here are the top five things you should know before you begin your holiday.

1. Free camping is permitted on Council-controlled public land in a certified self-contained vehicle (with a minimum three day capacity toilet and grey-water storage facility), except in restricted and signposted areas.
2. Free camping is limited to no more than three consecutive nights, or five nights in any calendar month, at any single location.
3. Toilet and grey-water must be disposed of in an approved dump station. Camp sites must be left clear of all rubbish, waste and damage, and the dumping of waste and litter will result in instant fines or prosecution.
4. Vehicles that are without toilets and grey-water storage facilities are not designed to be used at any place where there is no immediate access to toilet facilities, and such vehicles are not permitted for freedom camping and must use camping ground facilities.
5. All freedom campers are asked to comply with any request to move on, by any Officer of the Council, or any person authorised by Council.
