Freedom Camping in Nelson

Planning a free camping holiday in the Nelson region? Here are five important things you need to know.

  1. Certified self-contained campers (with toilet and washing facilities on board) can camp on Council land anywhere in Nelson, apart from in residential areas and in public parks and reserves.
  2. Non-self-contained campers must camp close to public toilets, but camping is not allowed in residential areas or on public parks and reserves.
  3. There is a three hour parking limit in Millers Acres at all times. Weekend markets operate in Montgomery Square. Freedom campers will be moved from 5am on Saturday and Sunday.
  4. View a map of Nelson city areas where free camping is permitted, or view free camping permitted areas in the wider Nelson area.
  5. You must dispose of your waste at an appropriate dump station. See a list of free public dump stations in the Nelson region.
