Freedom Camping in Grey District

Freedom Camping in Grey District

Want to learn more about free camping in Grey District? There are five key things you should know before you begin your free camping holiday.

  1. You can camp anywhere on Council-controlled land if you are in a self-contained vehicle (displaying a current self-containment warrant sticker), except for the Jack's Road area in Paroa.
  2. Campers staying in Greymouth are encouraged to use the FREE Council-provided campervan parks at Cobden Bridge and Jellyman Park. Both have facilities to assist freedom campers, such as dump stations and litter bins.
  3. If you are not self-contained, you can still freedom camp on any Council-controlled land as long as you are more than 200m away from a formed road.
  4. Freedom camping is limited to three nights in any one location, and ten nights overall in any calendar month.
  5. Grey District Council’s regulations regarding freedom camping only apply to Council-controlled land, and do not affect Department of Conservation land, State Highway or private land. DOC has their own rules regarding camping on DOC-controlled land.

Avoid penalties. Read the Grey District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw 2014 for full rules and regulations.
