Freedom Camping in Southland

Interested in free camping in the Southland district? Here are five key things you should know before you begin your free camping holiday.

  1. Freedom camping is permitted in designated areas, including Weirs Beach Recreation Reserve, Colac Bay Boat Ramp Area, Nightcaps (beside the racecourse), Dunsdale Recreation Reserve, Monkey Island Picnic Area, Aparima Bridge Reserve, Waiwaka Recreation Reserve, Mandeville Taylor Park, and more. See the full list of freedom camping areas, and restrictions on each, via Southland District Council.
  2. Motorhome and caravans outside of conservation campsites must be self-contained.
  3. There are restrictions on the duration any one party can free camp in one area, ranging from overnight to up to 28 days per calendar year. Check the restrictions specific to your chosen campsite, and if in doubt be sure to contact Southland District Council to ask.
  4. Be tidy, and always leave campsites clean. Always use public toilets provided, and dispose of all waste water at a dump station.
  5. Be a responsible and considerate camper. Limit generator use to between 8am and 9pm to prevent noise nuisance, protect native plants and animals, use biodegradable cleaning products and wash in a container away from waterways, and consider the rights of other people, including locals and fellow campers.

Avoid penalties – read the Southland District Council Camping Control Bylaw 2012 for full rules and regulations.
