Freedom Camping in Buller

Planning a free camping holiday in Buller? Here are the five key things you need to know before you begin your free camping adventure.

  1. Freedom camping is permitted in Council-controlled areas (excluding ‘no freedom camping zones’) for certified self-contained vehicles for up to three consecutive nights in the same area.
  2. No freedom camping zones include Constant Bay, Joyce Bay (Charleston), area adjacent to the mouth of the Nile River, Tui Dellaca Reserve (Tauranga Bay), the road at the end of the carpark at Okari River, Carters Beach Domain, Marrs Beach, the area adjacent to the east end of the Buller Bridge, the full length of both Tipheads-Buller River, Flagstaff (Karamea), and Oparara River mouth.
  3. Permission to freedom camp in a ‘no freedom camping zone’ may be granted with prior written permission from Council.
  4. Any freedom camper must leave their camp site clean and tidy and appropriately dispose of any waste. Dump stations are located at Countdown Supermarket and New World Supermarket (Westport), Punakaiki Beach Camp, Karamea Holiday Park, and Reefton Domain Camping Ground.
  5. Fires are no permitted at any site.

Camp responsibly. Read the Buller District Council Freedom Camping Control Bylaw 2012 carefully for full rules and regulations.
