Freedom Camping in Hurunui

Freedom Camping in Hurunui

Planning a free camping journey in the Hurunui district? There are five key things you should know before you begin your adventure.

  1. Freedom camping is permitted in Council-controlled public areas other than those prohibited, including any area with a “no camping” sign displayed, and any urban area or area within 500 metres of any accommodation facility (excluding Rotherham Reserve, where camping is permitted).
  2. Free camping is prohibited at Motunau Beach, The Hurunui River Mouth, At Anne’s Lagoon, Cheviot Hills Domain, The Hanmer Basin, Cathedral Road, Manuka Bay and Port Robinson.
  3. Freedom Camping must only be undertaken in a vehicle that is certified as a self-contained vehicle and includes on-board cooking facilities.
  4. An area used for Freedom Camping must be left in a clean and tidy state by users. Toilet waste and greywater must be disposed of at an appropriate dump station, and all refuse must be disposed of at an approved refuse collection facility.
  5. No person may free camping for longer than two nights in any calendar month at any single location, and any request made by an Authorised Officer to move on must be complied with.

Camp responsibly! Read the Hurunui District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw 2011 for full rules and regulations.
